Children Learn . . . .  what they live
and as adults often spend years "unlearning"
it - to overcome the negative consequences.

       When I approach a child,
       s/he inspires in me two sentiments;
    tenderness for what s/he is,
and respect for what s/he may become. 1

Children are like seeds planted in the ground.
    They must be watered daily.
    With constant care and attention,
the seed will grow into a plant
    and eventually flower. 2

Home is the place where children
first learn how to limit their wishes,
                       abide by rules,
                  and consider the rights
                  and needs of others. 3

    If children live with criticism,
    they learn to condemn.
    If children live with hostility,
    they learn to fight.

    If children live with fear,
    they learn to be apprehensive.

    If children live with pity,
they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
    If children live with ridicule,
    they learn to feel shy.
Your children will see
what you're all about
by what
you live
rather than
what you
say. 5
    If children live with encouragement,
    they learn confidence.

    If children live with tolerance,
    they learn patience.

    If children live with praise,
    they learn appreciation.

    If children live with acceptance,
    they learn to love.
Children are likely
to live up to
what you believe in them.
6
    If children live with approval,
    they learn to like themselves.

    If children live with recognition,
they learn it is good to have a goal.

    If children live with sharing,
    they learn generosity.
It is not giving children more
that spoils them;
it is giving them more
to avoid confrontation. 7
If children live with honesty,
they learn truthfulness.
It is not a bad thing
that children should occasionally,
and politely,
put parents in their place.
8
If children live with fairness,
they learn justice.

If children live with kindness
and consideration,
they learn respect.
Children require guidance
and sympathy
far more than instruction.
9
If children live with security,
they learn to have faith
in themselves
and in those about them.

If children live with friendliness,
they learn the world
is a nice place
in which to live.
10
We worry about
what a child will become tomorrow,
yet we forget
that s/he is someone today.
11

If you bungle
raising your children,
I don't think
whatever else you do well
matters very much.
12
In North America today,
there is a pervasive tendency
to treat children as adults,
and adults as children.

The options of children are thus steadily expanded,
while those of adults are progressively constricted.
The result is unruly children
and childish adults.
13

While we try to teach our children all about life,
Our children teach us what life is all about.
14

Children seldom misquote.
In fact, they usually repeat word for word
what you shouldn't have said.
15

Love the children

And now you - an Adult,
do you wonder where you got
some of your self-defeating traits?

Where did we ever get the crazy idea
that in order to make children do better,
first we have to make them feel worse?
Think of the last time you felt humiliated
    or treated unfairly.
    Did you feel like cooperating
    or doing better? 4
If children live with jealousy,
they learn to feel envy.

If children live with shame,
they learn to feel guilty.
